It encompasses the main island referred as the Pearl of the Orient and a part of the region in the mainland, which is bordered by the neighbouring state of Kedah. The narrow hinterland region is the Seberang Perai, formerly known as Province Wellesley. The two regions are connected by Penang Bridge, which has a span length of 13.5 km and ferries are also available as an alternative mode of transport to the island.

PenangSurrounding the main island are small islands which includes Pulau Jerejak, Pulau Rimau and Pulau Kendi, while Pulau Aman is situated to the south of Seberang Perai.
